It is sad that so many women give up so early. When ever I see a woman breastfeeding her child, I always make it a point to look at her in the eyes and smile at her and if I feel that it is right, I say something encouraging. I was blessed in that when I had my babies, I lived in a community that was predominately hippie, so it was expected to nurse your children for years and to be comfortable doing it anywhere.
I would just like to say beware not to look down on or think any less of women who doesn't breast feed. You don't know why they don't. While it is best to breast feed, and while it's horrible that some women chose not to out of selfish reasons, some women's bodies simply don't do what they were designed to do. Which is why I wonder about North Americans - we have a horrible rate of breast feeding and I think it is because breasts are sexualized here so much and breastfeeding is discouraged.
There is a pediatrian in this town who has actually told people that she thinks it is just gross to nurse a baby beyond 3 months of age.
