Saga is a leading provider of products and services primarily tailored for customers over the age of 50 in the UK. Decor of traditional carvings and hanging lanterns aim to set an appropriately exotic mood. The ship also has a Spa on Deck 4, featuring an indoor pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, small fitness room and four treatment rooms. Saga specialises in providing holidays for those older than 50 and sells direct to the public, rather than through travel agents.
Travelling companions of 40 and older are allowed onboard, which is beneficial to couples who want to bring their grownup family and in-laws with them, or those who may need assistance with personal care.
The makeover of Saga Sapphire has been carried out with a conscious desire to attract passengers at the lower end of the age range. The clientele are elderly but decidedly not geriatric and almost exclusively British, with an occasional sprinkling of passengers from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and an even rarer appearance by Japanese visitors.
A popular feature of the Saga service is the provision of a free door-to-door chauffeur service for passengers living within 75 miles of the departure port, or a shared chauffeur for distances of up to miles.
Alternatively, transport by rail, coach or domestic flight can be included in the fare; passengers who choose to drive are offered free parking. The concept of "resort casual" is not one with which Saga passengers are familiar or comfortable. This is not a ship for the dedicated follower of 21st -century fashion. Many men wear jackets and ties, even on casual evenings, and suits on informal nights. Blazers and cravats are also frequently in evidence, particularly among members of the Britannia Club for frequent cruisers.
Women wear blouse-and-skirt combinations and an assortment of dresses, from the light and airy to elegant cocktail outfits. There are two formal nights on seven-night cruises and three on voyages of two weeks, at which dinner jackets and bow ties are de rigeur for the men, and elaborate ball gowns are common for the ladies.
During the day, men go with casual trousers and shorts, topped by Tattersall check shirts. Women seem to prefer blouses and jumpers.

The two shops on Deck 8 supply formal wear, resort clothes, confectionery, souvenirs, travel necessities, pharmaceuticals. Daytime lectures and evening shows are held in Britannia Lounge which is on Deck 8. It serves also as the meeting point for the departures to shore excursions, afternoon teas, and cocktail parties.
Britannia Lounge is furnished with soft chairs and sofas - it is the boat's main entertainment venue with an array of musicians and cabarets in the evening, hosting lectures and dancing lessons throughout the day. To the opposite is situated the Card Room, decorated in gold leaf, open to card-game enthusiasts. The Drawing Room is also a perfect place for a daytime retreat. Cooper's Bar on Deck 8 is a popular pre-dinner bar, themed around the comedian Tommy Cooper.
The flat-screen TV is used for half-hour comedy shows. The Aviators Bar is one deck down, adjacent to Reception Desk. Drinks are available also from the Beach Club on Deck 11, by the pool. The Clubhouse is adjoining the pool area - an indoor room with games like table football and tennis. A small troupe of singers and dancers are available onboard the Saga Sapphire. They perform productions of show tunes that are popular. The afternoon tea is accompanied by a classical trio or string quartet, playing for pre-dinner dancing.
Comedians, guest singers, virtuoso instrumentalists take part in cabaret performances, although Saga Sapphire is not a late-night clubbing vessel. The mini-golf course St Andrews is on Deck 12, in front of the ship.
Saga's shore excursions are usually led by local guides and they prove to be popular because of the reasonable price. The Saga Sapphire beauty and spa salon is situated deep down on Deck 2.
Alongside the hair salon and the treatment rooms are the steam room and the sauna. A rudimentary gym also awaits for you. There are a whirlpool bath and a heated indoor pool. The main pool is situated on Deck 11 and it is surrounded by sun loungers and deckchairs. Also on Deck 11 is a small golf course, called St Andrews.
