Seattle faces vulnerabilities from a lahar reaching the Kent Valley. Interstate , as well as oil and natural gas pipelines, water lines, power lines, and sewer mains that serve Seattle all cross the potential lahar area in the Kent Valley. This area also hosts many of Seattle's major food distributors. Lahars can cause floods that transport massive amounts of sedimentation farther downstream.
In a Mt. Rainier eruption, if lahars reach as far as the Kent Valley, Seattle's Duwamish Valley could experience post-lahar sedimentation. To read more about Volcano Hazards, including Lahars click here.

Volcanoes do not erupt at regular intervals, so it is difficult to know exactly when or where the next eruption will happen. Karlstrom said people should not be surprised by the threat of volcanoes. The reason the region has a mountain range and hills for recreation is because of past eruptions.
Rather than one of the large mountains erupting, Karlstrom believes it is more likely the next eruption will sprout from the ground and create a hill of ash and lava. This rich volcanic zone contains the well-known landmark volcanoes and approximately 2, other known volcanic features ranging from small cinder cones to substantial shield volcanoes.
Eruptions in the Cascade Range during the past years. The time between eruptions is usually measured in decades or centuries, so eruptions are not a part of our everyday experience. However, recent eruptions at Mount St. Helens vividly demonstrate the power and impacts that Cascade volcanoes can unleash when they do erupt.
